Everyday you learn something new. I am very excited for our new project. We are making a horror/comedy movie. It will probably be like a spoof of Paranormal activity. It seems like it will be really fun, and the end product will be really amazing, but we don't have a lot of time to do it. In 2 weeks we have to create a story and script, get a cast, do all of the filming, and then all of the editing. It's going to be a really great project though!

Everyday you learn something new.
Reflection                                                                            Zephyr Smith

I am very proud to say that we finally finished our graffiti intervention in time for the celebration. I think it was very successful, but there is a lot more to this project then just the cleanup. We have done so much, not all of it was perfectly efficient, but it was very successful.

We began this project a few months ago. We started off very slow, spending most of our time in class talking about what we were going to do but not really doing it. Those first few weeks were spent finding an idea, thinking about it, changing it, and then changing it back to the way we had first thought of it. We didn’t really act we just planned. It ran us way behind schedule for the whole duration of the project. The whole time it seemed like we were a week behind everyone else. We began the process of building our website, designing a flier, and meeting our contact. We caught back up, but then our meeting with our contact gave us a huge change in our project. All along we had been working with the wrong idea. Instead of working against graffiti we should have been working with art. We had to reverse a lot of previous work. It was hard but it made our project better in the end. From there we had to add finishing touches to our poster and website. We then planned our cleanup. Unfortunately we had to reschedule several times due to communications issues. We finally had our clean up witch went very well.

Our project seemed very good overall. We had a very successful clean up and when we finished we all felt as if we had done something. To me we made a huge difference in  our community, witch was the goal of our projects. I also learned how to manage people in a group, witch is probably a pretty valuable life skill. We educated the community as well as helping it. In the end it was a very successful project.

Everyday you learn something new. Our project this weekend ended badly again. I forgot to get the supplies on Thursday and on Sunday I went to get them and the office was closed.  I had to cancel the whole cleanup in a matter of around 3 hours, and 2 people didn't receive their notification. As we've been told, huge communication breakdown, and since I was getting the supplies and in charge of communication, my fault. We fixed our communication problem and we have gotten the supplies, so there is hopefully nothing else that can go wrong this time. Our reschedule is for this Sunday, and we have to get the whole cleanup and everything related to it on the presentation board very quickly. I have no idea how we plan to do that. We also had to scrap our video as it is now too late to do this. Right now I honestly have a very negative feeling for how this whole project went, Which I will express in future blogs and my reflection.

Everyday you learn something new. Today one of our group members had an interesting experience that he shared with us. He had a vision of a run down church and drew it on a piece of paper and showed us. I'm not sure what is with the world and people having strange visions, I heard a story recently about a young child having a similar problem. It seems like they are all based around religion as well. Maybe its all the hormones in our food. I'm glad I don't have this problem. I do seriously wonder why people have this. It dosnt make any sense scientifically. So far our group is making a lot of good progress. Ill have a more in depth update tommorow.

Everyday you learn something new. Today I thought about what Mrs Schwarting had talked about, the relationship between 7th and 8th graders. It seems accurate and present in my group. The 2 8th graders took charge of the group and the 7th graders followed. The 7th graders also seemed as if they didnt work as hard and complained more. I think there are some of them who are capable of leading the group, but if others were in charge we would have alot of problems. Even so I feel as if I ended up in charge of my group, even though we voted for Zach as the leader. I think we should try something to put the 7th graders in charge, perhaps activities after the projects are finished.

Everyday you learn something new. Today was a bit shocking and a bit disappointing for our group. We had scheduled our clean up for this weekend on Saturday, but we found out it would have to be rescheduled because the teachers have to be there and all of our group members have to be there. I guess it all makes sense, but I feel like I might not be doing as much of a good job as I thought I would be. Between all the redoing of work and our whole event breakdown I feel like we are falling behind. I am really hoping we will at least manage to get everything done on time.

Everyday you learn something new. Throughout my whole life I have never been much of a magazine person. I like many people have a smart phone, and in the non-default browser that I use I found a special section for online magazines. The first time I used it I figured it would be a bit dumb and pointless, the way I felt about magazines at the time. It turns out I was completely wrong. I like technology stuff and in the webzines I found several websites with all kinds of articles that I actually cared about and wanted to read. The main 3 were Lifehacker, Techcrunch and Wired. Eventually the webzine function was removed from the browser app due to a security issue, witch I ironically found out about through those webzines. It would be really great (at least to me) if things like that made it to print and were sitting in lobbies. I wouldn't have to read Time Magazine all the time. At least I finally found a magazine style form of media that I actually want to read.

Everyday you learn something new. Our group has finally had our meeting with our contact, Terry Laaker. He gave us a lot of information that was very intriguing and helpful. He told us a lot about the people who tag, how they are mostly just artist trying to get their work out and many of them are young. He told us about the art of graffiti, and the history. From all the information we gathered from him we have a lot more to work with now, but it also appears we have taken the wrong approach. We should have worked more towards the idea of art and legal graffiti, instead of pushing anti graffiti. Its good that we have more information and a better understanding now, but we have to undo a lot of what we've done, starting with our website. At least we have been given more time on the project to do so. It also gives us more time to start creating a great presentation. The end of April will come up before we know it, so we need to get this done soon.

Everyday you learn something new. Today in Language Arts we got back our research papers. I've been a bit excited/anxious, even though I had pretty much forgot about that paper. I got a 12.5 out of 16. At first glance that seemed really bad, considering it was around a C, but I feel a bit better after understanding that this is a "rough rough" draft, and that I have done well compared to my peers, and out of those who I read, I though they were good. Some of the things that are noted in the edits/revisions on my paper I do not nessecarily agree with, but I don't know everything, and will probably find that what I think is wrong. I do think that the APA template didn't help, because even though I used it along with many people I know, our average grade was probably barley more than a 2 out of 4. I also think that we were led away from good formatting (based on the presentation) by BibMe. The BibMe formatting was much different from the APA formatting in the presentation. I am a bit excited to go over my paper with the teachers, but also a bit nervous because I already know we will disagree about a lot of things.

Everyday you learn something new. Things with my group are still going extremely well. Everything has fallen into place. Our website, www.evograffiti.weebly.com is all written, we just need to finish putting up our research paper. I have talked to Terry Laaker and we are meeting on Thursday. I have also spoken with Lydia Odem and handled our supplies and clean up date schedule. The flyer has been designed. We do still need to post it though. We also need to get our video going if we are still going to do it. Next week should be a lot of work our presentation. I'm glad to see that we went from being the group that seemed a little behind to being almost done.

Everyday you learn something new. Today was a very good day for our group and project. We contacted the City Of Phoenix to get approval on our clean up, and found out that they were going to give us materials as well. This is great because we can now assign the people who were in charge of materials to other tasks. With this new amount of resources things should come together pretty quickly. I am very excited to see what will happen next week once things are up and running after the weekend. We have several communication actions to make on Monday so it should be an efficient day. I can wait to see how all f this goes.

Everyday you learn something new. It seems that our project is coming together pretty well. Everything iss up and running its mostly just making this better that we still need to do. We d need to start the video soon, but I think that we will have that covered next week. I think we need some more work done on the actual clean up dates though. It seems to be the one unknown. The awareness is going well, but the actual clean up is not moving forward at all. Hopefully we can get that going next week too.

3-26-12 (Makeup for 3-16-12)

Everyday you learn something new. I guess since I'm writing this right after spring break I should probably blog about it. I did a lot of camping over the break witch was really fun. I rediscovered my love for it, and thought about why I hadn't gone in so long. It was mainly due to the fact that I had become very busy and finances hadn't permitted until this last week. It's pretty interesting thinking about how society and human life moves so fast. For me It's nice to slow down, but I think a lot about all the things I want to do. I wonder if other people experience this too. I also thought about why people don't like camping, as I had been talking to a friend who didn't. Maybe it is just because people are too stuck to their electronics and comfortable luxuries.

3-14-12

Everyday you learn something new. Today was a very constructive day in Language Arts for both myself and my group. I have come up with a few ideas for my "spreading the word". As I've said before I plan to make and distribute photos, and create a website. I also want to make a video to put on Youtube and use the Kony style of spreading the video through social media. My group made a few big decision too, to scrap our wall idea. We decided it was a bit improbable with our resources and that we had not done enough research to continue with it. I think it was a wise decision, because I feel that the idea is personally very useless and unsafe, as well as difficult to impossible for us to do with the limits we've been given.

Everyday you learn something new. Now that we are pretty close to being finished with Tuesdays With Morrie I thought I might share my opinion compared to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I have so far liked Tuesdays With Morrie a lot more. I remember thinking that The The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was slow, but Tuesdays With Morrie is also slow, and I like it. I find it interesting how there are so many flashbacks (convenient for literary elements). I think it has a similar parallel plot element with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I am finding that Tuesdays With Morrie seems very short. When doing the reading for each section it seems like you don't read very long and there are only 4 sections. It's unfortunate that were going to be done soon.

Everyday you learn something new. Lately I have become very worried about a back injury that I have. Last season in football I hurt my back and had to stop playing. It was serious enough that I took a season off and had to let it rest several months. I had to do stretches several times a day for it. I recently started playing football again and now I am starting to feel it hurt again. The whole thing is beginning to make me worried that I will never be able to play again. I don't consider football the most important thing ever, but I hate the thought of not being able to play. I have been doing it for years, and hoped to be doing it for several more years. I hope this all works out in my favor and I can start playing again without worrying.

Everyday you learn something new. Today we were able to send our first email to our projected group partner. As our communication person I hope to see a response soon. I have been assigned with making posters and presentations for our group. I am pretty excited about that since I do actually enjoy doing things like that. I want to start soon but I think our project needs to develop more first. I can make base creations for our posters/presentations though. I have also determined that it might be nessecary to make a website for educational/presentation purposes.

Everyday you learn something new.Now that our I've finished my research paper I have started thinking about our group project. Since my job is communications I have been trying to figure out who our contact is and how that should work. I have ideas, and I favor the Neighborhood Services Department people out of all the possible contacts we have found, but I can't make decisions without consulting my group. I was thinking about creating a website for us, but it might not actually be necessary. I want to create a Skype account, but that might not be necessary either if our contacts don use/have it. I think we need to get some group time in class, like a whole period, so we can all make these decisions together and everyone will know what to do next.

2-29-12

Everyday you learn something new. Today we watched a video about a man and his photo editing. As I said in class, there was a definite relationship in the art of the 2 projects, the photos and our graffiti. I think that the differences are more important though, because the pictures are legal art, but graffiti is not. I read a whole article today about how graffiti can be justified, at http://www.graffiti.org/faq/damico_a_legal_and_economic_analysis_of_graffiti.pdf. I think that people need to find a way to make their graffiti somewhere other than walls. Could the same thing be done on paper? I dont even embrace the idea of legal graffiti walls, because it seems dangerous to get a huge group of people that might be in gangs together. I know my project is more about cleaning up graffiti, but in our awarness i think we should do something to recommend alternatives.

Everyday you learn something new. My research has been going pretty well so far. I have found may sites by individual cities about graffiti, most of witch are .gov. I have also found many .org sites that outline financial effects of graffiti as well. There are a few .com articles that I hope to use, they are from sources that I find reputable, like the New York Times, but I still have to get approval for them first. In my research I found a few articles about graffiti internationally, in cities like Athens. I cant spoil the surprise, but I find it very interesting. I also found an article while looking for more information about the 2004 Olympic Stadium in Athens. Apparently after building the stadium and holding the Olympics, the stadium was abandon. It is now destroyed, and there are many refugees and gipsies living in the remains. It's terrible to see a country build something so great to hold the biggest sporting event in the world, then leave it to rot.

Everyday you learn something new. So far I think the direction we are going in our study of Tuesdays With Morrie are looking pretty good. I like the idea of doing literary questions and group discussions on it. I'm not as excited about the literary elements, but maybe those will seem better after I read and attempt to do them. I hope that I will like this book. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society wasn't really that bad, It just got a bit slow in some places. I don't really think it was very gender based, it's just that many guys in our class weren't very big fans of it. I don't know if Tuesdays With Morrie will be that much different, but it will be interesting to see what people think over the next few days.

Everyday you learn something new. Today was a pretty good day for our project. Since I haven't posted about it before my group's topic is graffiti. One of my group members actually told me a lot of interesting information about it. I always thought that graffiti was mostly gang related. He told me that more of an artistic release for people, mostly teenagers or young adults. I found out about existing programs in Phoenix (Graffiti Busters) while looking for group contacts. My personal job for my group is communication/education. I am supposed to manage our group contacts and educate the community about graffiti. It seems like a pretty big and important job. I was given the research assignment of financial effects of graffiti. I am planning to start my research today. I think this will turn out to be a great project.

Everyday you learn something new. After the recent discussion in class I have thought about 21st century learning, since we were told it would play a part in our projects. Being a teachers son I hear about all the programs that are being brought in like PBL, and its really interesting. The focus of some of these things seems to be attempting to give students a bit more freedom, but it doesn't seem to be a good idea to me. As children we can't really be trusted with the freedom to be that independent. Some people would not gain anything because they are too free to just do some kind of really bad project. I think the idea is good but it needs to be refined for the reality of how children our in this time.

Everyday you learn something new. I feel the need to voice my opinion on the way things have been going in our class. Last Friday Mrs. Schwarting went a little crazy and got mad about how nobody was working on their project. Even though I rebelled a bit then some of the things she said were valid complaints. Mrs. Schwarting said that people weren't taking the class seriously. That is very true. People don't take that class seriously. She said that people weren't putting enough effort into their work. I don't really know about others. but for that specific project I didn't put enough into it. The only thing I feel she said that was wrong was specific to that day, that we all said we needed more time. We didn't all say that it was about 50/50. I also think there is nothing wrong with doing our class work at home. We really need to do something to put some structure into that class, because unfortunately some people cant handle so much freedom.

Everyday you learn something new. I have been thinking about my groups project. Even with the research that I have done I still haven't had a good idea for our group project yet. I think I cant really find much because I don't live in the community. I talked to my group and there hasn't been much of anything we can do from them either. I think I need to  talk to some active people in the community to find better ideas. What other places should I go for ideas? I have also tossed up visiting community centers and looking at bulletins and talking to people there. I hope can find a great topic for my group. We'll definitely need it.

Everyday you learn something new. I recently observed something that I found very interesting. I was at a meeting to apply for a home through Habitat For Humanity. The fact that the people were present there suggests a financial struggle. I noticed that before the meeting started, most everyone present there was using a Smartphone. I'm not opposed to the idea and I don't think it's really a bad thing, Its just something that's become part of society. Everyone has a smartphone now. I remember when it was the really cool new thing, and now it's just commonplace. I'm sure I will continue to see things like this as I grow up, it comes with advancing society and technology, but this is the first time it has really hit me. I continue to wonder what might come next. I guess I'll see that in a few years.

2-6-12

Everyday you learn something new. Last week I got in alot of trouble and I have been thinking about the events recently. I was talking to 2 of my freinds before class (around 8:07), and in the conversation me and 1 other person used our phones to look at something. A teacher came up and asked us to give her our phones. The 2 of us were boshed shocked, but gave up our phones without argument. I mean no offense to any staff, only to the rule. I found out later that day, from my parent, that I had goten a referall. I had had one prior offense for a phone (it rang in class), about 4 months ago. I found out at the same time that it was a referall as well. Why was I not informed of this when it first hapened, and by a staff member, not my parents. Maybe some people dont care, but when I get a referall I would like to be informed that I received one! A school shouldn't just hand out referalls without even telling the kids that they received one! On top of that, I feel the second offense shouldnt have even happened. The first interrupted class, therefore being nessecary. The second was completley unessecary. I wasn't harming anyone or distrupting learning. I dont feel what I did was wrong, or deserving of a referall. I always thought rules were there to protect us, not force us through unessecary referalls and grounding.

Everyday you learn something new. Today was are final exam day! here are my responses.

Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Final Exam           Zephyr Smith

6. I think that I can neither agree or disagree with Isola on weather “reading good books ruins you for enjoying bad ones”, because it is all dependent on your opinion of a good book. Every person has a different opinion on what a good book is. There are so many different types and genres, that for each person a good book is something completely different. Some people may like a book that you consider a “bad book”. In my opinion there are only books that you like and books that you don’t like. There are no good or bad books. For Isola, she probably got used to a certain style of book that she liked, which became her version of a “good book”. Her “bad books” were everything that she didn’t like.

3. My favorite character from the Society was Isola, because she was so different from everyone else, or even the popular view of a normal person. Isola had a somewhat different occupation from others in the society, being a potion maker. She didn’t do something that you hear of a lot in the time period that she lived. It was interesting to hear about what she did. She also has a very direct voice. Isola was never trying to hide her feelings or thoughts from anyone except when she was spying on them. When writing to Juliet she said that she wanted to ask personal questions and that her friends had recommended she didn’t. Most people would probably try to hide the fact they were asking something personal and wouldn’t mention that they were told it wasn’t a good idea.  She also took everyone and everything very seriously. When she was sent the book about phrenology it was kind of a joke to everyone else, except Isola, who took it seriously. When she began her spying she actually took notes and tried to accomplish a mission. Isola was also a very honest and caring person. She seemed to take a liking to everyone very quickly. She always wanted to make people happy. She didn’t think less of anyone because they were different, like Sidney. She even made sure to keep his secret safe. Isola is a generally kind person and would be great to know.

1. I really liked how the novel was structured in letters. It was something I’ve never read before. I was amazed how it didn’t feel like there were gaps in the story. The letters also gave a more precise feeling of each person personality. It was also pleasurable just because it was different. It probably wouldn’t be as great if it were a common thing though. Letters are much more personal than other forms of writing. Each person has their own different style of writing letters and it gives an insight onto their personality. Letters are much deeper than other forms of writing as well. People put much more meaning into them. Most other forms of writing are meant to be fast and don’t allow much deep thought to be present in them. Letters let people say what they mean in a much more deep and personal way then other forms of writing.

Everyday you learn something new.Today is a really irritating day for blogging. The internet filtering system at the school is broken, so we have to write our blogs in word and post them later. The whole idea behind the filtering system is stupid. If the teachers monitor the kids in the computer lab we wouldn’t need a filtering system. Then we would be able to use sites that are blocked and useful (YouTube). We also wouldn’t have problems like the internet being down due to it, exactly what’s happening right now.

Everyday you learn something new. Today was our High School Registration day! In Social Studies we went through the long process of understanding our high school choices. I was really confused on electives but I came to understand what the 2 best choices would be. Yesterday was also the first day in Language Arts that I think the backchannel might have been helpful, but everyone did seem more focused. I wonder what Language Arts will be like next year along with all my other classes. Sometimes I can wait and others I'm preety happy the way things are now.

Everyday you learn something new. I am really beginning to think that there needs to be SERIOUS change in this class. All the little things we are supposed to uphold are dissapearing. We are suppoesed to have a class meeting on a weekly basis. That has not happened. We could actually really use one. And i dont think anyone takes these blogs seriously, the students or the teachers. This is the place where we are supposed to voice our opinion about things. I decided to put a tracking code in on my blog to see if it has been viewed. So far there has been one view and it was me. Alot of people have compleley fogotten about theese things and havent posted for an excess of 6 weeks. And from what I see people dont put alot into their blogs when they do post.

Everyday you learn something new. Latley I have been thinking about our book, The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The book is ok, it gets boring in some places, but I excpected that because it's not really my type of book. I think it dosn't really relate to our class at all. In fact the only class it's really helpful in is Social Studies, due to its relationship to WWII. I almost used it for a project, but decided to take on a different topic. When the book was introduced we were told it had something to do with a service project, but that dosent seem to be correct. The book has also become mildly inappropriate, and for some people it's a bit hard to handle.

Everyday you learn something new. Today was strange due to my recent absence, and the substitutes. I made me realize how little anyone seems to care about this class, or school in general. Whenever we are in the computer lab people tend to play games or mess around another way. In class people spend more time cracking jokes. I'm not saying that I'm perfect because I'm not but still, nobody seems to care. Out of all the people It's the "Really Smart Kids" and the "Favorite Classes" that I see this in. Everyday you learn something new. Today I learned about how people hod a grudge and how they get mad about the most superficial of things. Ill keep names anonymous when describing this situation. One day during a class we were presented with a project. Naturally, everyone stated what they were doing to the people around them. I and a friend (who was doing a different project) got into a short, half joking argument about the projects. The teacher told us we shouldn't be talking during instruction and we stopped. The teacher didn't make it seem like a big deal, so we figured it wasn't. A few weeks later we got in another half joking argument, this time during a work time. I had nothing to do so I stayed around to help. The argument was about if someone else was doing their work. Both arguments were school related. Because of it we both lost points in the class. The incidents were small and early in the quarter. I don't even understand how the teacher is bothered this much by these things and doesn't say anything to us. Then the teacher gives us a 20% loss for the 2 small incidents. This whole thing is completely irrational and extremely irritating.

Everyday you learn something new.  Today we had a lot better luck with the back channel. We had a lot less fluff and people were able to use their phones to add to it so there was more people and more discussion. Its still distracting but a lot less when there isn't so much fluff. I also thought that the test we did was helpful. It helped me figure out who the characters were more accurate. I also think the chart for the character would be helpful, if you want to make it. I don't think it is a class project though, it should be an individual thing of you want to do it.

Everyday you learn something new. Today was an interesting day for us in Language Arts. We tried using a chat stream to take notes over the day. I think it was a very bad addition to the class. Watching that stream and knowing It's there makes It far harder to concentrate on the class. You really want to see whats happening there or add to it and you cant do that and concentrate at the same time efficiently. People were also abusing it to an extent. The things posted were rarely educational or discussion related. It was mostly jokes or people talking to each other. The Ipads themselves also serve as a distraction to the people using them and the people around.
